How to Set Up a Domain, Email, and Website: A Simple Guide

Starting a new project, business, or personal blog? One of the first steps is setting up your domain, email, and website. It may seem daunting, but don’t worry – I've got you covered with these general steps to guide you along the way.

1. Buy a Domain Name

To kick things off, you’ll need to purchase a domain name. Think of it as your online address. Services like GoDaddy, Squarespace, or another provider of your choice can help you with this. Choose something catchy and relevant to your project.

2. Hosting Your Website

Once you’ve got your domain name, the next step is to host your website. GoDaddy and Squarespace offer user-friendly, drag-and-drop website building tools. If you’re reasonably familiar with computers, you can design your website using these tools, making it look professional without needing to write any code.

3. Setting Up Email – The Trickier Part

Email setup can be a bit more complex. Both GoDaddy and Squarespace resell email services, but from our experience, the support can be slow due to the intermediary. GoDaddy resells Microsoft Office 365, while Squarespace does the same with Google Workspace. We highly recommend going directly with Microsoft or Google for better support and reliability. Here’s a step-by-step approach to using Microsoft for your email:

4. Set Up Your Email Account with Microsoft

After choosing Microsoft for your email services, follow their setup guide to create your email account. Microsoft’s support resources are very comprehensive and helpful.

5. Change Your DNS Record

You’ll need to change the DNS record to point to Microsoft. This might sound technical, but Microsoft will provide you with the specific DNS entries to use. Follow their instructions, and you’ll be just fine.

6. Configure Your Email Clients

Lastly, set up the actual email accounts and configure your clients (like Outlook, Mail, etc.) to connect to your new email. Detailed guides are available on Microsoft's website to help you configure these settings.
